Wolf Park Hunt

Wolf Park, IN. The wolves are taken, on the weekends, into the bison pasture. The whole pack does not go, just two or three of them. They are allowed to exhibit hunting behaviors, although because the bison are all grouped into one huge group and able to protect their offspring, the wolves tend to leave them alone. They just sniff around, show off their stalking technique, and then get pushed around by the cows. This session, after a few minutes they all ended up taking off and sniffing around the borders for mice and other little snacks that would be less of a waste of time. Not a single bison has ever been hurt during this "hunt", nor has a wolf ever been injured by the bison.

The wolves are not allowed to stalk the bison if there are sick or injured ones in the herd, because then they might actually go in for the kill. Still, wolves only have a success rate of about 5-10% IN A PACK, which is about 1 kill in every 20 attempts. The wolves at Wolf Park are also fed enough so that they don't need to hunt the bison, and the bison are not worried or stressed out about this at all making it just another little show of natural animal predator/prey behavior without the blood and death.
